Community service is a large part of National Honor Society membership. According to a recent nationwide survey of nearly 1,400 National Honor Society advisors, the average amount of time each chapter spent on service projects is 980 hours. When multiplying those man-hours by the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, the value of each chapter’s community service hours is at least $7,105 on average.
Chapters also make a positive impact on their communities through their fundraising efforts. The survey respondents raised a total of $2,231,952 in one year, which is equivalent to an average of $1,600 per chapter. Thus, the overall economic impact of each chapter comes to more than $8,706 annually when the value of volunteer hours is combined with charitable funds raised.
